Best 3 Fort Lauderdale Accessible Excursions. Making a choice of the best 3 accessible excursions in Fort Lauderdale was actually easier than one would think. True. There are hundreds of available excursions easily accessed by travelers. But, overall, Fort Lauderdale is lagging behind many cities on accessibility. So, my decision was easier than most.
Flamingo Gardens
Flamingo Gardens Botanical Garden is 60 acres of tropical paradise. Our Botanical Gardens is a showcase for more than 3,000 species of rare and exotic, tropical, subtropical, and native plants. Our Arboretum contains some of the largest trees in the state of Florida.

Experience a taste of tropical Florida as soon as you enter Flamingo Gardens with a jungle of tropical trees, plants, and over 1,000 orchids. Flamingo Gardens Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary gives residence to permanently injured and non-releasable birds and animals, and is home to the largest collection of Florida native wildlife- including alligators, bear, bobcats, eagles, otters, panthers, peacocks, and flamingos.

Take a narrated 30-minute tram tour through the back 50 acres and experience three different ecosystems, as well as the largest cycad collection in the United States. Stay on the tram the entire time or disembark to discover the Wetlands, the Cycad Garden, the Native Plant Walkway, the Wildflower Garden or the Mango Grove. Visit the Birds of Prey Center, and walk through a half-acre aviary with over 250 wetland birds native to Florida. The Wray Home Museum nestled in the botanical garden was built in 1933 by Floyd L. and Jane Wray as a weekend residence and is the oldest residence in Broward County west of University Drive. It has been restored to provide visitors to Flamingo Gardens a glimpse of life in South Florida in the 1930s. Stop in the gallery for different shows and exhibits. Tour guides are always present to help you get a taste of old Florida history.

Flamingo Gardens was originally founded as Flamingo Groves, a citrus orchard, in 1927 by Floyd L. and Jane Wray. The Wrays came to Florida in 1925 and were deeply intrigued with the horticultural possibilities of the subtropical locale. They purchased 320 acres of land around and including Long Key in the Everglades. On January 2, 1927, Floyd L. Wray incorporated Flamingo Groves, beginning what was to become one of the first botanical gardens and tourist attractions in South Florida.

While Flamingo Gardens is fully wheelchair accessible, it is located 20 miles from the center of Ft Lauderdale so transportation may be needed. That can be iffy. I would suggest making arrangements ahead of time if needed.
