I have been very clear about the horrible conditions I recently found in both New Orleans, LA and Charleston, SC when trying to navigate those cities on a scooter, power chair or manual wheelchair. Bluntly, both were awful.
Yesterday, I visited Port Canaveral when Enchantment of the Seas docked there as a port of call. I had made plans to meet two friends for lunch at Rusty’s Seafood and Oyster Bar. Imagine my surprise when we docked at Terminal 3 and from the terminal to Rusty’s was 1.9 miles. And, I had a bad taste in my mouth from Charleston and New Orleans. Still, I struck out on a blazing hot, sunny day.
Admittedly, it took me about a half an hour, but if you are in a city that is interested at all in accessibility for the disabled, you need to visit and research Port Canaveral. Port Canaveral does it right.
My total mileage for the day after one adds in the terminal and getting on and off the ship, was pushing 5 miles and I never saw a crack or break in any sidewalk. All of the intersection and crosswalk ramps were smooth and well maintained. There was not even a bump along the entire route. Somebody in Port Canaveral knew what they were doing, actually gave a damn, or were themself, disabled. Whatever the reason, well done Port Canaveral.
If you are in my disabled community, and want to try a trip like that, I highly recommend it. Other than being a little hot, it was a breeze. Go for it!
Well done—- excellent review
