While cruising in open waters north of Cuba and about 60 miles wnw of Key West Florida yesterday, crew members of the Mardi Gras spotted a small vessel in rough seas stirred up by a tropical weather system. The weather conditions are currently being impacted by a system that is projected to develop into tropical storm Alex later today.
The crew saw the distressed vessel just before 8 a.m. and the Mardi Gras stopped its return trip to Port Canaveral to assist, taking on 16 stranded people. The Carnival ship was on a seven-day cruise in the Western Caribbean.
All 16 of the distressed craft’s occupants were adults; 11 men and five women.
Those with identification were of Cuban nationality. All 16 were seen by medical staff onboard the Mardi Gras, and they were given food and clothes.
Cruise ships regularly assist in similar rescues, both for stranded mariners as well as refugees. When rescues are made, the individuals brought onto the cruise ship are given food, water, shelter, and immediate medical care. There was no further information on the condition or any injuries to the rescued party. A rendezvous with the US Coast Guard was coordinated at sea. All 16 occupants were safely transferred to Coast Guard custody on a Coast Guard cutter at about 2:45 p.m. Friday.
