Which entrance would you prefer to use?
Often, businesses have stairs leading up to their front doors, with no option for an elevator or ramp. In order for a person with a mobility disability to access that establishment, they have to use an alternative entrance.
The photos here are from a hotel in San Diego. It’s a gorgeous hotel, with a very grand entrance.
Then you have to use the side entrance that is not only poorly lit, but also used for storage. And, to make matters worse, you can’t even get in the door without an escort.
This is not an equitable experience.
I am not implying that it is wrong to have to use an alternate door. Sometimes, that’s just not possible. However, I do think that the alternate entrance needs to be just as inviting and welcoming as the door for everyone else.
